Clinical Depression

Clinical depression is a medical illness. It is far more serious than stress or feeling sad. Person suffering from clinical depression lose their interest in all activities which they used to like a lot. They always want to be alone and do not have any interest in their daily activities also. They always seem stressed, sad and unhappy.

All these things affect individual's behavior, activities, health and social behavior. Clinical depression can last for weeks, months or even for years. A person with clinical depression could attempt or think about suicide because they feel that there is nothing left in their life anymore.

Types of Clinical Depression

Clinical depression is further explained in different forms because of some different pattern and behavior of the illness. Basically they are broadly three major types:

  • Chronic Depression (Dysthymia)
  • Bipolar Disorder

Major Depression

Individual suffering from major depression does not feel like performing their daily activities and routine even if they have a feeling of emptiness and worthlessness. They loose a lot of weight and concentration.

Chronic Depression (Dysthmia)

It is less sever depression because individuals suffering from dysthmia are able to perform their work and daily activities. It is a long term depression and it triggers for some time then goes away, and after sometime it returns. It is not severe as major depression but can trigger it after sometime.

Bipolar Depression

Bipolar depression is also known as manic-depressive illness. The time period of depression depends on the cycle of mood change if it is severe then it is called mania and severe low mood is called depression.

Symptoms of Clinical Depression

With the help of these signs and symptoms you will be able to recognize the clinical depression easily. Following are symptoms of clinical depression:

  • Low energy and tiredness
  • Unable to work properly
  • Lose in confidence and concentration
  • Negative thinking and lose ability to make decisions
  • Change in weight
  • Look sad and unhappy

Causes of Clinical Depression

There is no particular or clear reason for the depression but there are factors that contribute to the causes of the clinical depression. Following are factors which increase the clinical depression:

  • Psychological Tendency: An individual with less confidence, low self-esteem or shy nature can suffer from clinical depression.
  • Stress: Stress of work, relationship, business, life, study can trigger the clinical depression. Excessive stress can convert into depression.
  • Environment: The environment and surroundings plays a vital role in clinical depression and it is one of the most important causes of clinical depression. If environment is not health and happy then individual can suffer from clinical depression.
  • Biological: In human brain there is a chemical that is responsible for the emotions and mood. The imbalance in this chemical can be a big cause of clinical depression.
  • Alcohol or Drugs: A lot of people take alcohol and drugs when they are stressed out or not feeling well. It increases the stress and makes you duller, unhealthy and unhappy which finally becomes a clinical depression.

These are the reasons which you can study and understand the patient's situation. Individual could understand how to deal with depression and have the correct treatement.

Treatment of Clinical Depression:

There are two major types of treatment that can help you a lot. Those two treatments of clinical depression are:

  • Psychotherapy: Doctors treat patients in classes of cognitive behavioral therapy which helps the patient a lot. There are a lot more other therapies which are used according to the type of stress.
  • Medication: There is a lot of antidepressant in the market but never take them without the prescription of the doctor. First consult a doctor and then if the doctor feels that you require them only then go for it because there are a lot of side effects of antidepressant.
